Communication Studies Major Katie Nork Selected as Undergraduate Speaker for Winter Commencement Ceremony

Katie Nork, a graduating communication studies major from Mountain Top, Pa., is East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s student speaker for the winter commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 12, at 8:45 a.m. in Koehler Fieldhouse. Nork was selected from a pool of student speaker candidates.

Undergraduate student speaker candidates must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average entering the fall semester; a demonstrated record of service to the university community and a record of leadership and cooperation; demonstrated evidence of meaningful extra/co-curricular involvement and must be in good academic standing.

Nork knew from when she attended Open House in fall 2011 that ESU was the right fit for her. Four years later, she is graduating from ESU, a semester early, having served as president of her sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and a work/study student in the Career Development Center and the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, and a dedicated member of our campus community.

In her time at ESU she has been involved in several other organizations including Order of Omega Greek Honorary, Euclid’s Elements Math Club, the Economics Club, and the Hemlock Suites Community Board, Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society, and also served on the 2015 Homecoming Court.

Through her involvement in Greek Life, she participated in many efforts to benefit the community. She performed over 40 community service hours each semester for a variety of nonprofit organizations, including AWSOM, the SPCA of Luzerne County, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and more. Most recently, she played a role in Project Turkey—a Greek-wide fundraising initiative to help the Salvation Army of Monroe County provide Thanksgiving dinner to over 600 families. Nork alone raised over $1,200 of Greek Life’s $7,500 goal.

“I’ve taken advantage of the many opportunities I’ve been given at ESU,” she said. “Through these experiences, I found a second home and a second family at ESU.”

Nork credits ESU and her experiences at the university for the person she has become.

“ESU has given so much to me, and I hope that one day I am able to give back to the campus that made me who I am today,” she said, “This university truly prepared me for my future and I hope the entire graduating class feels the same.”
