ESU Alumna Celebrates 100th Birthday

Alumni Eugenia Jean Eden celebrating 100th birthday

East Stroudsburg resident and graduate of East Stroudsburg University Eugenia “Jean” Eden’72 M’76 celebrated her 100th birthday on November 20 with family and friends.

Jean’s colorful career included employment as the director of education for Country Cottage Day Care in Bethlehem, Pa. and coordinator of gifted programs and a reading specialist for the Pocono Mountain School District. 

Through the years she also volunteered as a tutor for the East Stroudsburg School District, Monroe County League of Women Voters, Monroe County Historical Association and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Monroe County. 

An emeritus board member of ESU’s Alumni Board of Directors, Jean is pictured here her daughters, Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D., president of ESU, and Frank Johnson, president of the ESU Alumni Association Board.

She remains an active member of the Pocono Services for Family and Children (Monroe County Head Start Program), the NEPA Community Federal Credit Union American Association of University Women, Phi Delta Kappa International, PA Association for School Retirees, the PA State Education Association and the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Retired Faculties. 

She was also one of the individuals featured in the 1995 book, Women Who Made History in Monroe County.

Jean’s husband was also linked to ESU – Professor Emeritus William E. Eden, who passed away in 1992.

Jean is most proud of her family – daughters Jaynellen (Richard) Mannix, Dr. Alice Jody (Charles) Ackerman, Kathryn (Dale) Heller, and her six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren
