ESU Annouces Events for Homecoming 2012

“Blast from the Past” is the theme of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s 2012 Homecoming week festivities, which begin on Sunday, September 30. Events will give alumni and other visitors a chance to look back at the university and the local community through the decades and to see new facilities that usher ESU into the future. “Blast from the Past” highlights include a home football game against West Chester University on Saturday, October 6. All Homecoming activities listed below are open to the general public at no cost unless otherwise stated, and the schedule is subject to change as more events are added.

REC-EX Annual 5-K Run and One Mile Walk
Sunday, September 30
Registration at 7:30 a.m., Race will start at 8:00 a.m.
This fifth annual event will kick off Homecoming. For more information and to register, contact Jill Harper at 570-422-2978.

Comedian Evan Wecksell
Tuesday, October 2
7:00 p.m., Common Grounds, University Center
This event is open to the public at no extra cost and is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, 570-422-3396.

ESU’s Homecoming Pageant
Wednesday, October 3
8:00 p.m., Keystone Room
The Homecoming Pageant is an opportunity to recognize students who have made significant contributions to our campus and the local community through volunteer efforts. The nominees for ESU’s Homecoming king and queen are presented at a judged pageant. Each candidate is evaluated by a panel of people on poise, campus and community involvement, and presentation of their position statement. The scores of these three components will be used to select the finalists. During the final phase of the pageant, each candidate will be asked a question regarding the respective charity the candidate chose to support. Based on their response and their previous score, the king and queen will be selected and the winners will be recognized during halftime of ESU’s Homecoming game on Saturday, October 6.

Thursday, October 4
Pink Light Walk
5:30 p.m., Keystone Room
Breast cancer survivors will join students from East Stroudsburg University and community members for the 12th annual “Pink Light Walk,” which will begin in the Keystone Room at ESU and conclude at the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center at Pocono Medical Center (PMC), 206 East Brown Street in East Stroudsburg. The event is sponsored by ESU’s Department of Health Services, ESU’s Student Activity Association, the PMC Hughes Cancer Center, the Monroe County Office of the Area Agency on Aging and the Monroe County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. The event will begin with registration at 5 p.m. and information booths followed by a brief program at 6 p.m. The walk will start at 6:15 p.m. The first 500 people to register for the walk will receive a T-shirt and pink glow light candle to carry during the walk. At the conclusion of the walk, participants may enjoy refreshments and participate in a raffle drawing. This event will be held rain or shine. Friday, October 5
Remembrance Day Program
1:00 p.m., Keystone Room
Members of the campus community and the general public are invited to attend this event to remember members of the ESU family who passed away in the last year. The program will celebrate the lives of students, faculty, staff and alumni who will forever be remembered as ESU Warriors. Alumni Reunion and Distinguished Alumni Awards Banquet
5:00 p.m., Keystone Room
This annual event pays recognition to those receiving this year’s Alumni Awards and the reunion classes of 1957, 1962 and 1967. This year’s award winners are: Distinguished Alumni Award – Stephen Luckey ’62 and Earl Hulihan, Jr. ’71 M’81; the Dr. George Thompson Jr. Award – Salima Kane ’90 M’92; the Jim Barniak Award – Thomas Barrow ’62; the George Ockershausen Student Service Award – Richard Hennessy ’12; and the Great Teacher Award – Dr. Sussie Eshun, professor of psychology at ESU.

A cocktail hour, served dinner, and formal program will conclude in time for guests to view the fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium. Tickets for the banquet are $35 and reservations may be made by contacting the Office of Alumni Engagement at 570-422-3530.

Warrior Spirit Night
8:30 p.m., Eiler-Martin Stadium
ESU students and Warrior fans are invited to attend the Spirit Night event held at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The event will include performances from the university marching band and other fun school spirit activities.

Homecoming Fireworks Display
9:30 p.m., Eiler-Martin Stadium
A brilliant fireworks display will be held at the ESU football stadium to kick off the weekend events. As a reminder, alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the stadium.

Saturday, October 6
ESU Athletic Hall of Fame Brunch
8:30 a.m., (registration 8:00 a.m.) Keystone Room
The ESU athletics department will host a Hall of Fame induction ceremony for alumni and coaches in recognition of extraordinary athletic and academic achievement at ESU. The inductees include Barry Roach (football), Thomas Washburn ’65 (football/baseball), Chris Ip ’78 (swimming), Todd Painton ’93 (basketball), Melanie Wentz Welsh ’89 (track & field) and Jennifer Russo Ritter ’98 (soccer), along with the 1964-65 football teams and 2001 field hockey team.

This event is open to the general public; however, reservations must be made to attend. Reservations are $30 for adults and $15 for children, and include a ticket to the Warriors’ football game against West Chester at 1 p.m. To purchase tickets, please contact Sports Information Director Greg Knowlden at 570-422-3312 or gknowlden@esu.edu.

Alumni Tailgate
9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Henry A. Ahnert, Jr. Alumni Center
Twenty-two affinity groups will be tailgating in the lot, including several that are celebrating anniversaries. Guests will enjoy food and beverages at the hospitality tent, music and activities for children. In keeping with tradition, the group with the best tailgate area will be awarded the “Best Tailgate Award” now on display in the Alumni Center.

Rec B Open House
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Rear of Hawthorn Suites
The public is invited to tour ESU’s newest fitness facility, which features cardiovascular machines with attached televisions, free weights, an elevated track and a studio for fitness classes.

Tours of Hemlock and Hawthorn Suites
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
These new residence halls provide 969 beds and offer one full bath to every two students. They also provide the students with five suite-style options from which to choose. Hemlock and Hawthorn Suites are heated and air-conditioned using geothermal technology and have Wi-Fi available to students. Tours will leave from the lobbies every 15 minutes.

LGBTQA Program Center Open House
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Shawnee Hall
Visit the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer & Ally (LGBTQA) Program Center in its new location in Shawnee Hall. Light refreshments will be available.

Speech-Language Pathology Department Open House
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Second Floor of Monroe Hall
The newly renovated, 29,400-square-foot Monroe Hall houses the speech-language pathology and communication studies departments. The building contains two computer laboratories, four classrooms, a 68-seat stepped auditorium and offices.

East Stroudsburg University Homecoming Parade
11:00 a.m., East Stroudsburg Borough
The parade will step off from the parking lot of ESU’s Kemp Library, located on Smith Street, and will end in front of the Mattioli Recreation Center, on Centre Street. The family-friendly parade will include floats, candy for the kids, and more! Football Game: ESU vs. West Chester
1:05 p.m., Eiler-Martin Stadium
Cheer on the Warriors as they take on the West Chester Golden Rams. Halftime features a second recognition of the Homecoming king and queen and the Athletic Hall of Fame inductees and a marching band performance. General admission tickets for the game are $10, tickets for reserved chair back seating area in front of the Eiler-Martin Stadium press box are $15, and tickets for seniors aged 65 or older and children under 12 are $5.

Soccer Games: ESU vs. Slippery Rock

Warrior Women’s Soccer, 6:00 p.m.

Tickets, which may be purchased at the gate, are $6 for non-ESU students and $3 for children under 12. The event is free of charge for students with an ESU student I.D.

Sunday, October 7
Special Olympics
9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Various Locations on ESU’s Campus
Athletes will participate in such activities as soccer, bocce, and volleyball. ESU Women’s Field Hockey vs. Limestone

Cheer on the ESU women’s field hockey team as they take on the Limestone Saints. Tickets, which may be purchased at the gate, are $6 for non-ESU students and $3 for children under 12. The event is free of charge for students with an ESU student I.D.
