ESU Announces Events for Homecoming 2011

Homecoming week festivities for 2011 at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania are set and will begin on Sunday, October 16, with a 5K run and mile fun walk on and conclude with the traditional and ever popular home football game against Millersville University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, October 22. All Homecoming activities listed below are open to the general public at no cost unless otherwise stated:
5k Run & Mile Fun Walk
Sunday, October 16
7:30 a.m., Eiler-Martin Stadium
ESU’s Recreation Center will host its Fourth Annual 5K Run & Mile Fun Walk to kick off Homecoming week. The race will benefit the ESU Recreation Center and the ESU Exercise Science Club to help further professional development. Participants can print an entry form online by visiting www.esu.edu/reccenter and clicking on special events. Participants may also register on-site at 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the event. The entry fee for the 5k run is $20 for ESU Students and $25 for non-ESU students and the fee for the one mile walk is $10 dollars for ESU students and $15 for non-ESU students. Comedy Show Featuring Adam Mamawala, the King of Campus Comedy

7:00 p.m., Common Grounds
Touted as the “King of Campus Comedy” at the New Jersey Comedy Festival, Adam Mamawala, will entertain guests with his award-winning comedy show. Mamawala is a 24-year-old stand-up comedian from New Jersey who has entertained guests at venues such as House of Blues in Las Vegas, and Gotham and Broadway Comedy Club in New York City. He also has been recently named on Funny or Die’s website as one of Splashlife’s “30 Under 30: Comedians to Watch.” East Stroudsburg University’s Campus Activities Board will sponsor the event. This event is open to the public at no extra cost.
Christopher Kennedy Lawford to Speak on Substance Abuse and Addiction

7:00 p.m., Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts
In observance of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, nationally-recognized actor, author, and activist Mr. Christopher Kennedy Lawford, will deliver his inspirational and personal message, “Substance Abuse and Addiction: Inspiration is Found in Recovery” at ESU’s Abeloff Center for Performing Arts. This event is open to the general public at no cost. A book signing opportunity will immediately follow Lawford’s presentation. ESU’s Homecoming Pageant
Wednesday, October 19
8:00 p.m., Keystone Room
The Homecoming Pageant is an opportunity to recognize students who have made significant contributions to our campus and the local community through volunteer efforts. The nominees for ESU’s Homecoming King and Queen are presented at a judged pageant. Each candidate is judged by a panel of people on poise, campus and community involvement, and presentation of their position statement. The scores of these three components will be used to select the finalists. During the final phase of the pageant, each candidate will be asked a question regarding the respective charity the candidate chose to support. Based on their response and their previous score, the King and Queen will be selected and the winners will be first announced Friday, October 21st at the Warrior Spirit Night event and also recognized during halftime of ESU’s Homecoming Game on Saturday, October 22. This event is open to the general public at no cost.

Remembrance Day Program
1:00 p.m., Keystone Room
Members of the campus community and the general public are invited to attend this event to remember members of the ESU family who passed away in the last year. The program will celebrate the lives of students, faculty, staff and alumni who will forever be remembered as ESU Warriors. Friday, October 21
ESU Men’s Soccer Team vs. Malloy
5:00 p.m., Eiler Martin Stadium
Come cheer on the ESU men’s soccer team as they take on the Malloy Tigers Friday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium. A special event and fireworks display will follow the soccer match. Tickets, which may be purchased at the gate, are $6 for non-ESU students and $3 for children under 12. The event is free of charge for students with an ESU student I.D.
Alumni Reunion and Distinguished Alumni Awards Banquet
6:00 p.m., Keystone Room
ESU alumni are invited to commemorate the Gold Grad Class of 1961 and celebrate the accomplishments of deserving individuals receiving this year’s Alumni Achievement Awards. Awards are: the Distinguished Alumni Awards; the Young Alumni Achievement Award; the Jim Barniak Award; and the George Ockershausen Student Service Award. Awardees include Dr. Audrey Doberstein ’53 of Wilmington, Del., Bruce Frassinelli ’61 M’69 of Schnecksville, Pa., Krysta Weiss ’11 of Bangor, Pa., Richard Burkholder ’59 of Carlisle, Pa., James Cotner ’72 of Lewisburg, Pa., Stephen Blank, Jr. ’07 of Henryville, Pa., and Elizabeth Rothenbecker Kammer ’02 M’04 of Port Orange, Fla. Tickets for the banquet are $25 and reservations may be made by contacting the Alumni Engagement Office at 570-422-3659
Warrior Spirit Night
8:30 p.m., Eiler-Martin Stadium
ESU students and football fans are invited to attend the Warrior Spirit Night event Friday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium in preparation for the homecoming football game. The event will include games such as a wing eating contest, prizes, performances by the ESU cheerleaders, and the first public announcement of the homecoming King and Queen. The event will be immediately followed by a spectacular fireworks display sponsored by the Student Activities Association and the ESU Foundation. Special homecoming t-shirts will be distributed to the first 100 ESU students through the gate. This event is open to the general public at no extra cost.
Homecoming Fireworks Display
9:30 p.m., Eiler-Martin Stadium
A brilliant fireworks display will be held at the ESU football stadium to kick off the weekend events. The campus community and general public are invited to enjoy this cost free event. As a reminder, alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the stadium.
Saturday, October 22
ESU Athletic Hall of Fame Brunch
9:00 a.m., Keystone Room
The ESU athletics department will be hosting a hall of fame induction ceremony for alumni and coaches in recognition of extraordinary athletic and academic achievement at ESU. The inductees include, Dr. Jone Bush (softball coach), Janice Youorski (’89 basketball), Kristin Restivo O’Connor (’00 lacrosse and field hockey), Sal Mentesana (basketball coach), Joe Ahouse (’71 track and field), Scott Benoit (’85 football), Jim Lauck (’88 cross country/ track and field), Jason Petronis (’97 soccer), and also recognition of the 1962 men’s soccer team who won the NAIA championship. This event is open to the general public; however, reservations must be made to attend. Reservations are $30 and can be made by contacting the ESU Athletic department at 570-422-3578 or by visiting esualumni.org/hof11.
East Stroudsburg University Homecoming Parade
12:00 p.m., East Stroudsburg Borough
For the first time, sections of East Stroudsburg are part of the parade route which begins at Dansbury Park on Washington Street, winding through the residential area along Analomink Street, turning right onto Smith Street, coming to an end on Centre Street. The family-friendly parade will include floats, candy for the kids, and more! Football Game: ESU vs. Millersville
3:00 p.m. Eiler-Martin Stadium
Cheer on the Warriors as they take on the Millersville Marauders. Halftime features a second recognition of the Homecoming King & Queen and the Hall of Fame Inductees. General admission tickets for the game are $10, tickets for reserved chair back seating area in front of the Eiler-Martin Stadium press box are $15, and tickets for seniors aged 65 or older and children under 12 are $5.
