Hundreds of athletes will head to East Stroudsburg University on Sunday, October 6 to participate in the 2019 Monroe County Special Olympics Fall Invitational, sponsored by the University’s department of Sport Management. ESU seniors majoring in sport management are responsible for organizing the event this year, which will feature a time traveling theme. Special Olympics have been celebrated on ESU’s campus for more than 30 years.

Students at ESU organize and execute this event as part of their academic curriculum. “Our students have an opportunity to put into practice the skills they learn throughout their time studying in the sport management program. Planning, organizing, and completing this project is only a small part of the event,” said Edward Arner, instructor of sport management. “The students are also exposed to the impact their work has on the athletes, the local community, and ESU.” Arner is teaching the class, Organization and Administration, the class responsible for hosting the Special Olympics event.

Events will be held at the following locations on ESU’s campus: flag football on lower smith street fields; soccer on upper smith street fields; and, volleyball in Koehler Fieldhouse. The opening and award ceremony will take place in Olympic Town on the Koehler Quad. A complete listing of events may be found on the Monroe County Special Olympics webpage: www.somrc.org.
