East Stroudsburg University celebrated the 50th anniversary of the physics department on Friday, October 18.
Biology, chemistry, and physics were one department at ESU prior to physics becoming its own department in 1969.
The celebration took place during ESU Homecoming Weekend, in the Warren E. ’55 and Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center.
The celebration included a pizza party, a planetarium show, and a tour of the observatory.
Current physics students joined faculty, staff, and alumni in the celebration.
While the physics labs and classrooms remain in their original home in Gessner Science Hall, faculty offices moved to the Science and Technology Center in 2014.
Gessner Science Hall, which opened in 1960, is named after George Gessner, a physics professor who began teaching at ESU in 1947.
The observatory, which was originally located along Mary St., moved to the roof of the Science and Technology Center in 2008.
