East Stroudsburg University celebrates Latino Heritage Month with its eighth annual Latino Heritage Film Series. The festival will be held on Saturday, October 1 in Beers Lecture Hall on ESU’s campus. The festival is co-sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages, Philosophy, and Religion; the Office of the Provost; the College of Arts & Sciences; and Kemp Library.
Kicking off the film festival will be The Last Out at 2 p.m. The Last Out, shown in Spanish and English with subtitles, is about three Cuban baseball players fleeing their homeland to arrive in Costa Rica to showcase their skills for pro scouts. When one of them is cut by their ruthless agent and evicted from the apartment, the others must decide if they can still trust the agent or if they should take the dangerous trail north to the United States. The film’s director, Sami Khan, will be present for a question and answer session after the film.
Dreams of Chonta will be shown at 4:30 p.m. Shown in Spanish and English with subtitles, Dreams of Chonta is about Diego, an Afro-Colombian musician who leaves his family behind on the Pacific Coast of Colombia as he goes to New York, the promise land for musicians. He endures a solitary life as an undocumented immigrant and a minimum wage job at a cemetery all to become an ambassador of his music and culture.
Both films are free and open to the public, and will be shown with English subtitles. For further information visit esu.edu/latinofilmseries or contact Annie Mendoza, Ph.D., associate professor of modern languages at (570) 422-3842 or email amendoza@esu.edu.
