East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Service Learning Initiative and Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will host a Student Reflection Symposium on Thursday, November 6 at 2 p.m. in Lower Dansbury.

Eight panelists, including Glenn Geiser-Getz, Ph.D., professor of communication studies, Olivia Carducci, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics, Chin Hu, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology, LuAnn Magnuson, Ph.D., assistant professor of speech-language pathology, Peng Zhang, Ph.D., assistant professor of physical education, Gene White, Ph.D., department chair of physical education, Elaine Shuey, Ph.D., associate professor of speech-language pathology, and Grant Rauch, PACC Vista member, will discuss how critical it is for  students to reflect on their experiences in the college classroom and in the community.  They will identify best practices for using student reflection to deepen learning, discuss the role of assessment, and present examples of how to use reflection in college courses.

“It is critical to document the benefits of our work with students so that we know they understand course content and they understand the relationship between their learning and the needs of the community,” said Glenn Geiser-Getz, Ph.D., professor of communication studies at ESU.

The symposium is an effort that aligns with the university’s strategic plan and is meant to benefit both students and the community, according to Geiser-Getz.

The eight panelists hope their faculty colleagues will encourage students to seek out opportunities to apply classroom knowledge, interact with distinctive and diverse populations, and serve local and regional communities.

“Faculty have a critical role to play here, as they provide the conceptual knowledge and student mentoring that makes it possible to bring the classroom into the community and the community into the classroom,” Geiser-Getz said.

The Civic Engagement Seminar Grant-American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU) will be funding the programs, advertisements, and refreshments for the event.

This event is open to the public and it is free of charge. For more information on the symposium contact Dr. Geiser-Getz at 570-422-3585 or ggetz@esu.edu.
