East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania is giving students a space to showcase their work. On April 23, ESU students will present their research at the third annual Student Research and Creative Activity Symposium at the Science and Technology Center.

“Through participation in this symposium, students become active learners, develop intellectual curiosity and clarify career paths,” Peter Hawkes, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said. “These research projects enhance and deepen the undergraduate experience.”

Students from a variety of majors have submitted their work including biological sciences, communication studies, psychology, theatre, English and digital media technologies.

Highlights of the symposium include a presentation of the 2014 graduate thesis of the year, Changes in the Community Composition and Distribution of Bats in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Following the Emergence of White-Nose Syndrome, by Christopher L. Hauer, and at 2 p.m. the university welcomes this year’s keynote speaker.  Debra Fischer, Ph.D., an astrophysicist and professor of astronomy at Yale University, who was part of the team that discovered the first known multiple-planet system.

Before Dr. Fischer talks about her discoveries, students will give presentations on their own research.

Poster presentations will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by oral presentations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Designing a project, making discoveries and sharing the findings at the research symposium generates student excitement and interest in their discipline,” Jane Huffman, Ph.D., distinguished professor of biology, said. “Connecting with other students and the community at the symposium fosters a positive learning experience.”

The symposium is open to the public and it is free of charge. For more information contact Kevin Quintero, coordinator of graduate admissions and research symposium co-chair, at 570-422-3890 or kquintero@esu.edu.
