ESU Names Karen Lucas as Vice President of Enrollment Management

East Stroudsburg University President Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D., announced the appointment of Karen Lucas as ESU’s vice president of enrollment management effective July 1, 2020. With more than 27 years of work experience in higher education, Lucas comes to ESU from the University of North Florida (UNF) where she most recently served as assistant vice president of enrollment services. She also served as program director at the Kentucky Community & Technical College System, the dean of enrollment management at the University of New England, the director of undergraduate admissions at Oklahoma State University, and the senior associate director of undergraduate admission, community college relations and transfer student services and student enrollment communication center at both Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University during her career.
Lucas earned a Bachelor of Science in journalism from Boston University and a Master of Science in history from Florida Atlantic University. Under her leadership at UNF, the Fall 2019 cohort had a 93.6% retention rate from fall to spring, the highest in the university’s history. Her work has also contributed to a 35 percent increase in enrollment of new students at UNF since 2015 with a Fall 2019 enrollment of 17,297 students, the institution’s largest to date. Lucas’ contributions to UNF also include managing a budget in excess of $2M with 193 full and part-time employees, involvement in the planning, development and launch of a comprehensive range of recruitment, enrollment and retention initiatives for 12 departments, the introduction of a first year mentor program, development of a parent and family orientation program and oversight of the University’s articulation agreements.
As ESU’s new vice president for enrollment management, Lucas will report directly to the President and will serve as a member of the University’s senior leadership team. In her role, Lucas will be responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic enrollment management plan focused on retention, recruitment and admissions, consistent with ESU’s strategic goals and objectives. Her direct managerial responsibilities will be for the Offices of Admissions and Enrollment Services (financial aid and the registrar) with frequent interaction with members of the Provost’s Leadership team, Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence, University Relations and Athletics while also developing valuable partnerships with external constituents.
