Many of us find the summer months a good time to relax, enjoy time with our family and catch up on our reading. With that in mind, I would like to announce ESU’s “One Book … One Campus” common reading initiative, now officially underway! A few months ago, a selection committee comprised of faculty, staff and students was asked to identify a book we could adopt for a campus reading experience that would start this fall. The group chose The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore (visit theotherwesmoore.com for details).

Of the six or seven titles considered, this one was chosen by the Selection Committee to be a prudent choice for this fall semester considering our short timeline. The Selection Committee thought it best to select a book with a proven record and supporting resources. They also wanted a book which could draw readers without extensive explanation and promotion. And they noted that they wanted something with obvious ties to a wide range of issues, disciplines, and activities. This book is a great fit.

My sincere thanks are extended to the members of the One Book, One Campus Selection Committee, chaired by Professor Peter Pruim. The committee did a great job on a very tight timeline. Our hope is that faculty, staff and students will be reading the book and that many faculty will find ways to incorporate the text into classroom conversations where appropriate. Campus reading circles will be strongly encouraged, and we will be checking into the possibility of having the author come to campus for a lecture and discussion of the book during the fall term.

So if you’re looking for a great book to read this summer, consider picking up a copy of The Other Wes Moore and become part of the conversation. The book can be purchased from the university store.
