Four students from East Stroudsburg University’s College of Business and Management competed in the virtual 2021 Pennsylvania Sports Business Conference Case Competition on April 23.

These sport management majors (shown here left to right: Tyler McCole, from Frackville, Pa.; Rece Bender, from Lancaster, Pa.; Austin Weitman, from Berkeley Heights, N.J.; and Caitlin Nicholls from Great Meadows, N.J) competed against five other institutions and brought home third place honors for their efforts.

This statewide competition offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to compete in the fast-paced world of sport business. Through this competition, students were able to showcase their skill sets and knowledge related to sport management while earning practical experience and increasing networking opportunities.

For this competition, ESU’s team was assigned to design a marketing plan for the Akron Zips football organization. Their marketing strategy consisted of a sales plan intended to increase paid attendance to home football games.

The team had a $100,000 budget to allocate among season tickets, group tickets and single game tickets in order to get the highest return on investment. According to Dr. Sylvester Williams, dean of the college of business and management, this competition is yet another demonstration of the experiential learning that is a hallmark of ESU’s business and management programs.
