Student groups, clubs and organizations, and academic departments at East Stroudsburg University will band together to fight hunger in the local community as they present the Empty Bowls eighth annual fundraiser from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, in the Keystone Room. The Empty Bowls concept is a well-known national grassroots initiative to raise awareness of hunger in our local and world community. ESU organizations and groups participating include the Hotel Restaurant Club, Club Management, Event Planning, and Ceramics Class. Robert McMullin, Ed.D., professor of Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management and coordinator of this event, has taken over this event in the last four years.

“The hospitality industry relies on its guests and the local community for success, but recognizes it needs to do more to help others,” he said.

The program’s highlight is a midday meal that includes a choice of three soups, bread and rolls, cheeses, vegetables, dessert, and beverages prepared by students. Guests will also take home a handmade ceramic bowl created by an ESU student to serve as a reminder that mankind must work together to end the empty bowls that remain unfilled in our community.

Last year, Dr. McMullin took his students on a tour of that same Salvation Army. “They saw first-hand how local citizens struggle to provide food for their family’s table, something many of us may take for granted,” he said.

Empty Bowls is open to the general public and all proceeds from the event will benefit the East Stroudsburg Salvation Army Food Bank Tickets are $10 per person.

During the last four years of Empty Bowls, students raised more than $5,000 in donations to fight hunger locally. For more information about the Empty Bowls program, visit www.emptybowls.net or contact Linda Fehervari at 570-422-3511 or lfehervari@esu.edu.
