Three East Stroudsburg University students attended the program “Academic Seminar on National Security” through The Washington Center in Washington, D.C. The seminar, which was held May 13-20, focused generally on the landscape of national security challenges facing the world today. The seminar gave college students from across the country a more in-depth understanding of the policy, operations, technology and risks surrounding cyber and national security in the United States. Discussions focused on such hot topics as global security concerns, the media’s role in national security, sanctions for cryptocurrency enforcement, whistleblowers and limits on government power, the impact of AI on national security, diversity in national security and offered students advice on future careers in national security.

The three ESU students who participated in the national security seminar were Ayah Ibrahim, a senior majoring in psychology from Saylorsburg, Pa., DeSean Chin, a senior majoring in political science from Chambersburg, Pa., and Christina Talero, a senior majoring in political science from Roseto, Pa.

Students spent the mornings on-site at The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars listening to a diverse itinerary of speakers including General John Allen, Retired U.S. Marine Corps Four-Star General, Former Commander of NATO International Security Assistance Force and U.S. Forces-Afghanistan; Charley Snyder, Global Head of Security Policy at Google; Kemba Walden, President of the Paladin Global Institute; Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD); Andrew Chisholm, Cryptologic Engagement Officer, Department of Defense; Mary DeRosa, Professor from Practice, Co-Director, Global Law Scholars Program, Georgetown Law; Juan Zarate, Global Co-Managing Partner and Chief Strategy Officer, K2 Integrity; Melanie Sisson, Brookings Senior Fellow Institutions; and Victoria Coates, VP at Heritage Foundation.

In the afternoons, the group traveled to locations throughout the nation’s capital for educational briefings. The briefings included meetings with officials from the U.S. Secret Service, National Security Agency, the Pentagon, the Institute of World Peace, the Embassy of China, the Embassy of Austria, the Cato Institute and the Brookings Institute.

“We are pleased to offer students high impact experiential learning experiences, like this Academic Seminar on National Security, that allow students to witness governmental agencies and personnel up close and personal,” Kimberly S. Adams, Ph.D., professor of political science said. “These experiences have been found to be a motivating factor for students to excel academically. When students encounter young professionals in high-ranking governmental positions, they begin to envision themselves in those positions.”
