Fourteen students of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania wanted to make a difference. They found an opportunity in running for homecoming king and queen. Candidates were required to fundraise for a charity, create a video or write an essay, and speak about their involvement on campus. This year’s candidates raised more than $5,000 for charities of their choice, including Salvation Army, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, and American Cancer Society.
Katie Reardon, a senior majoring in English from Rockaway, N.J., was crowned homecoming queen last week. Reardon raised $1,550 for Project Turkey, the Greek organizations’ initiative where money is donated to the Salvation Army in order to provide families in Monroe County with a Thanksgiving meal this November.
“I ran for homecoming queen hoping to give back to the university and community that has done so much for me,” Reardon said. “I am honored to be this year’s homecoming queen.”
Luis Feliciano, a senior majoring in theatre from Philadelphia, Pa., was crowned homecoming king. Feliciano raised $560 for Autism Speaks.
“I wanted people to see that anyone can be a king,” Feliciano said. “I want people to know that you can do anything if you believe you can.”
Homecoming events also included a kickoff picnic, the seventh annual drag show, midnight madness and the second annual bonfire.
