ESU to Host Veterans Day Celebration

East Stroudsburg University will host its 14th annual Veterans Day Celebration Friday, November 11 at 1 p.m. to recognize local veterans, servicemen and servicewomen in all branches of the armed services. The celebration will be in Beers Lecture Hall. In addition, there will be a military observance adjacent to the “Julia” statue at the front campus circle. Julia was originally acquired by East Stroudsburg State Normal School alumni in 1919 to commemorate and honor the school’s servicemen and women who had died in World War I.

The keynote speaker for this year’s event, Colonel Daniel L. Horn, became the 34th commander of Tobyhanna Army Depot on June 28, 2021. As the commander for 4,000 personnel, his responsibilities include supporting global readiness for Command, Control, Communications, Computer, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) systems across the Department of Defense.

Col. Horn started his military career as a tanker with the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Armor Corps with branch detail to the Quartermaster Corps after completion of the Reserve Officer Training Corps Program. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. Horn also has Master of Science degrees in Supply Chain Management from Kansas University, Lawrence, Kan., and Strategic Studies from Army War College, Carlisle, Pa.

An assignment as a tank platoon leader in the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, led to the role of maintenance officer for 3rd Brigade, while assigned to the division material management center. He later served as a company commander for the 284th Base Support Battalion, Giessen, Germany. In 2006, he worked in the G4 as logistics fuel planner

while assigned to United States Army Europe, Heidelberg, Germany. The colonel deployed to

Afghanistan to support the International Security Assistance Force as a J4 logistics officer.

In 2008, Horn worked with the 16th Sustainment Brigade, Bamberg, Germany, as the brigade executive officer. A year later, he served as the support operations officer for 391st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. In 2012, he worked as a joint logistics officer at Headquarters Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), Fort Belvoir, Va. Following this assignment, the colonel served as the chief of current operations for the 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, Joint Base Lewis McChord, Wash.

Horn commanded the 244th Quartermaster Battalion, Fort Lee, Va. As commander of the advance individual training battalion, Horn led five companies responsible for implementing an aggressive and rigorous battle-focused training. The training produced value added team members and warrior logisticians.

His most recent assignment was as the military deputy of Defense Logistics Agency, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) forward. As deputy, his responsibilities included supporting DLA warfighter customers across the CENTCOM area of responsibility.

His military schooling includes Officer Basic Course and Combined Logistics Officer Advance Course, Fort Lee, Va.; Petroleum Officer Course, Fort Lee, Va.; Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Joint Logistics Planning Course, Fort Lee, Va., and Army War College, Carlisle, Pa.

Horn’s awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters (OLC), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with one 1 OLC, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal with two OLC, and the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge (Gold).

The Veterans Day Celebration program will also include the armed forces medley, a wreath laying by ESU President Kenneth Long and Colonel Horn, and the playing of taps.

A reception will be held following the program in the foyer of Zimbar-Liljenstein Hall.
