As the academic year came to a close, East Stroudsburg University’s College of Education focused on advocacy.

On April 8, four students joined Dean of the College of Education, Brooke Langan, Ed.D., in Harrisburg for Day on the Hill.

Nina Buschi, a special education major and student teacher from Bushkill, Pa.; Brady Kiehl, an early childhood education major and student teacher from New Cumberland, Pa.; Jeremiah Derival, an early childhood education major and teacher candidate from East Stroudsburg, Pa.; and Darryl Longdon, a physical education teacher education major and teacher candidate from East Stroudsburg, Pa.; had the opportunity to speak in the rotunda about how they each benefitted from receiving the student teacher stipends.

On April 17, ESU hosted a roundtable discussion with faculty, students, local educators and PA Senator Rosemary Brown. Durin the session Francesco Curto, a history and secondary education major from Northampton, Pa., and Erin McArdle, a middle level education major from Jim Thorpe, Pa. talked about the inequalities in the current structure of student teacher stipends. Curto didn’t receive a stipend during his time as a student teacher, but McArdle did.

On May 8, Dean Langan returned to Harrisburg, this time with McArdle; Madison Wehrle, an early childhood education major from Dingmans Ferry, Pa.; and Sydney Seyler, a special education and early childhood education major from East Brunswick, N.J. McArdle spoke on the rotunda about the importance of student teacher stipends. They also met with lawmakers and staffers to emphasize the need for investments in K-12 educators and future educators.

These advocacy days are the most recent efforts of ESU’s College of Education to proactively combat the education workforce shortage.
