spike500The classic story of Pygmalion gets a modern twist in Spike Heels, a contemporary comedy by Theresa Rebeck, which will be presented March 4-9 by East Stroudsburg University’s Department of Theatre.

In the play, directed by Stephanie Daventry French, ESU associate professor and chair of theatre, love triangles among a group of friends and co-workers are complicated by lust, power and class distinctions.

Noting that the play contained “stinging one-liners,” The New York Daily News added, “The setting is Boston, the ending is happy and laughter abounds.” Time magazine added that the piece was “full of wit…and quirky details of plot.”

Curtain times for the production are 8 p.m. March 4-8; and 2 p.m. March 9. All performances are in the Dale Snow Theatre of the university’s Fine and Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets. The play is appropriate for older teens and adults due to adult language and situations.

General admission is $12. Tickets are $10 for senior citizens, faculty and staff with ID. The cost for students with ID is $7.

Advance purchase of tickets is highly recommended due to limited seating in the Dale Snow Theatre. Tickets may be purchased online with a credit card at www.esu.edu/theatretickets.  Remaining seats will be available at the box office beginning one hour before the performance. Only cash and checks are accepted at the box office.

Latecomers cannot be seated for this production. Audience members should plan to arrive and claim their tickets 10 minutes before curtain time to avoid losing seats to waiting list patrons.

Playwright Theresa Rebeck is best known for her scripts for NYPD Blue, Law and Order: Criminal Intent and LA Law. For her work on NYPD Blue, she earned several awards, including the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Award, the Writers Guild of America Award for Episodic Drama, the Hispanic Images Imagen Award and the Peabody Award.

Yoshinori Tanokura, ESU assistant professor of theatre, designed the sets and costumes for the production. Guest designer Annie Weigand created the lighting for the piece.
