East Stroudsburg University’s Wellness Education and Prevention team received a $10,000 mini-grant from the American Lung Association as part of its campaign to support tobacco control initiatives on campus.

According to Laura Suits, ESU’s coordinator of wellness education and prevention, the grant is intended to reduce the number of students, faculty and staff at ESU who use tobacco products. “This grant seamlessly aligns with the University’s wellness education and prevention mission. Our mission statement is to create a culture in which the pursuit of lifestyle is balanced to encourage individuals to take responsibility for choosing to be well,” said Suits.

Suits hopes that the grant will enable her and her staff to offer educational information to more than half of the campus community with regard to tobacco use and vaping, increasing their awareness about the harms associated with each. She also said the grant will provide opportunities for smoking cessation programs for students, faculty and staff. Suits, herself a current American Lung Association Freedom From Smoking® Facilitator (ALA-FFS), intends to provide the cessation trainings and hopes to train additional staff members to expand opportunities to educate.
