East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s department of sociology, social work & criminal justice is hosting its fifth annual Peter Roche de Coppens Sociology and Spirituality Lecture on Thursday, April 5 at 5:30 p.m. in Stroud Hall, Room 117. This year’s presentation by Jawid Mojaddedi, Ph.D., is titled “The Relevance of Rumi’s Spirituality and Mysticism Today.”

Dr. Mojaddedi is a professor of religion at Rutgers University. His area of research is early and medieval Sufism. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and raised from the age of 5 in Great Britain, he completed his studies under the supervision of the late Norman Calder at the University of Manchester, receiving his Ph.D. in 1998. He served for two years as assistant editor for Encyclopaedia Iranica, before taking up his current position at Rutgers, where he teaches courses in Islamic Studies and serves as director of graduate studies in the religion department. Since the publication of his verse translation, The Masnavi: Book One, which was awarded the 2004 Lois Roth Prize, he has been working towards translating the six books of Jalal al-Din Rumi’s magnum opus.

This is the fifth annual sociology and spiritually lecture, sponsored by the Peter Roche de Coppens Spirituality Fund. The lecture series was established in honor of the late Dr. Roche de Coppens, ESU professor of sociology. It is designed to help students’ awareness and understanding of the sociological significance of spirituality in one’s life.
