Madelon Powers Gallery to Present Where We Find Ourselves

East Stroudsburg University’s Madelon Powers Gallery will present Where We Find Ourselves, an exhibition by Lorna Ruth Galloway, which will run through Friday, October 9. The exhibition is curated by Damian Thorn-Hauswirth, assistant professor of art + media + design.

Hours for the gallery, located in the university’s Fine and Performing Arts Building, Normal and Marguerite streets, are Monday – Friday, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. A reception for the artist will be held on Wednesday, September 16 from 4–6 p.m. in the gallery. The exhibition and reception are open to the public at no cost.

Where We Find Ourselves considers the paths that images and our perceptions take through time, place, technology, and memory. Across the exhibition, images shift between physical and virtual environments, photography and printmaking, observation and reconstruction. Enduring landscapes are reimagined through impermanent wheat-paste installations made from fragile, non-archival materials, while motels and other roadside locations encountered across the southern United States are transformed into halftone screen prints. A journey to China is translated through the distinctive material language of risograph printing.

Los Angeles gas stations are re-encountered through the virtually constructed world of Grand Theft Auto V, drawing on Ed Ruscha’s Twentysix Gasoline Stations. Photographed within the game, the locations are digitally separated and rendered as charcoal screen prints. Additional collaborative works between Galloway and Thorn-Hauswirth, rooted in their experiences of place, allow images to move between artists, processes, and physical and digital worlds.

Born and raised in South Florida, Lorna Ruth Galloway is an artist and educator whose work draws upon her experiences growing up blocks away from U.S. Highway 1 and witnessing the rapidly changing subtropical urban landscape. The aesthetics of impermanence as they played out on the American roadside have been an integral part of the development of her visual worldview. Galloway received her MFA in Miami, Florida, and is currently a lecturer in foundations and screenprinting at the University of Central Florida. Her work has been exhibited internationally, with exhibitions across the United States, Europe, and China.
