Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and John Rutter’s Gloria will be the featured works at East Stroudsburg University’s Spring Choral Concert Wednesday, May 2.
The concert, sponsored by the University’s Department of Music, will be held at East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, 83 S. Courtland St., East Stroudsburg.
Chichester Psalms, a life affirming, serene work that premiered in 1965, is a modern choral classic noted for its difficulty and complexity. John Rutter is a prolific and popular modern composer of choral music, and the Gloria is a mainstay of the concert repertoire.
The Concert Choir will perform both pieces. Dr. Pauline Fox, director of music and organist at East Stroudsburg United Methodist will be organist for both pieces. Countertenor Patrick Fenning of New York City will be featured soloist for Chichester Psalms. Professional musicians from the Tri-State area will provide harp, brass, and percussion for the concert.
Opening the program, the A Cappella Ensemble, a select vocal ensemble, will perform several pieces including O Magnum Mysterium by Tomas Luis de Victoria;
Have You Seen the White Lily Grow, by Irving Fine’ and Danny Boy arranged by Joseph Flummerfelt.
Dr. James Maroney, ESU associate professor of music, directs both performing groups.
General admission to the concert is $3. Children 12 and under and ESU students with current I.D. are free. Admission is payable at the door only. There are no advance tickets available.
This program was supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
