The political science department and the political science club at East Stroudsburg University will welcome Nina Ahmad, Ph.D. to campus on Wednesday, April 17. Dr. Ahmad will give a lecture titled “Challenging Status Quo” in the Niedbala Auditorium located inside Warren E. ’55 & Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center (room 117) at 5:30 p.m.

Dr. Ahmad immigrated to the United States from southern Asia when she was 21 years old. She earned her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. Ahmad has worked as a molecular biologist and entrepreneur. She is a national board member for the National Organization for Women (NOW), a feminist grassroots activist organization, and has served as president of the Philadelphia NOW. Ahmad is the former Deputy Mayor of Public Engagement for the city of Philadelphia. In that position she oversaw several offices and commissions, such as the Office of Black Male Engagement and the Commission for Women, which required her to bring different coalitions with differing goals to the table. She served on the board of the Philadelphia Foundation, and in 2018, she ran in the Democratic Primary for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania. Ahmad believes that by bringing people together we can find solutions to many of the problems facing us.

“Ahmad brings a unique perspective to the political arena, as an immigrant, woman of color who has worked both as a scholar and activist,” said Kimberly S. Adams, Ph.D., professor of political science at ESU. “She’s been a champion for issues pertaining to equity, race and gender. She is a coalition builder who brings people together”

“Challenging Status Quo” is open to the public at no cost.
