As part of East Stroudsburg University’s Spring 2017 Provost’s Colloquium Series, Opera enthusiasts Eugene Galperin, associate professor of mathematics, and James Maroney, associate professor of music, will give a talk titled La Traviata: The World’s Most Beloved Opera on Wednesday, March 8 at 5:30 -7:00 p.m. in the Cecilia S. Cohen Recital Hall of ESU’s Fine and Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg.
The talk will address misconceptions that opera is an elite art form detached from the modern world or that it is available only to those in a few select cities.
One of the mainstays of La Traviata is a gripping tale of love, devotion, and sacrifice. Due to its memorable tunes and dramatic story, it is a perfect introduction into the genre for somebody who has never been to an opera theater.
The presentation will focus on the La Traviata’s cultural and historical background, the life and music of Giuseppe Verdi, on the development of operatic verismo, and some of La Traviata’s most memorable arias and ensembles.
It will also provide an introduction to the upcoming broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera’s Live-In-HD Series designed to make outstanding opera productions accessible to audiences throughout the world. The Met Live-In-HD broadcast of La Traviata will be screened Saturday, March 11, at 12:55 p.m. and Wednesday, March 15, at 6:30 p.m. at Cinemark Theater in the Stroud Mall.
The presentation is the third in the ESU Provost’s Colloquium Series’ spring lineup.
