East Stroudsburg University’s Provost’s Colloquium Series, an intellectual experience that promotes dialogue among ESU faculty, staff, students, and community, continues during the Spring 2023 semester with a presentation by Carol Dimopoulos, Ed.D., assistant professor of business management. The presentation, “Lipstick and Broken Pencils-Women and Workplace Violence”, will take place on Wednesday, February 22, at 5:30 p.m. in Beers Lecture Hall. The presentation will also be live streamed on the ESU Live Events webpage.

Dimopoulos will touch on the core concepts of oppression, inequity, and conditioning through toxic work cultures. Her research examines gender equity issues women face in regard to understanding the definition of the constitution of workplace violence, its cultural proliferation, and the conditioned norms which reinforce acceptance. An in-depth analysis will include the history of directed emotional violence against women in the workplace, how business culture created the framework which fuels emotional violence as a control mechanism and examine the gender specific tactics when perpetuated by both male and females. Methodologies such as non-violent communication and mindfulness will be examined as key drivers on the path to a woman’s self-actualization, breaking biases and the pattern of the acceptance of violent workplace communication as a norm, empowering women to use their individual voices to reject patterns of bias and reach their full human potential.
