East Stroudsburg University’s Provost’s Colloquium Series, an intellectual experience that promotes dialogue among ESU faculty, staff, students, and community, continues the Fall 2022 semester with a presentation by Artress White, associate professor of English. The presentation, “Scottish Genes, African Tapestry: African American Enslavement as Muse and Resistance”, will take place on Wednesday, November 2, at 5:30 p.m. in Beers Lecture Hall. The presentation will also be live streamed on the ESU Live Events webpage.
The history of American enslavement prevails in United States culture. In this latest iteration of the Provost’s Colloquium Series, professor and poet, Dr. Artress White, presents a multi-media performance of her poetry from a work-in-progress, “Scottish Genes, African Tapestry,” written as an historical memoir of her family’s documented enslavement in North Carolina. White will delve deeply into the complex history and trauma of chattel slavery and the options for freedom that tempted many under such hostile circumstances. Her work touches on various themes, from female enslavement to African repatriation, and the transhistorical parallels between institutional slavery and contemporary social justice movements.
