East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) celebrates Latino Heritage Month with its seventh annual Latino Heritage Film Series. The festival will be held on Sunday, October 20 in Beers Lecture Hall on ESU’s campus. The festival is co-sponsored by the department of modern languages, philosophy, and religion; the office of the Provost; the College of Arts & Sciences; and Kemp Library.

Kicking off the film festival will be The Wall: The Effects of its Imposing Presence on Migrant Families at 1 p.m. The Wall, shown in Spanish and English with subtitles, includes five short documentary films that bring a first-hand look at the reality of the Hispanic population in the U.S. and the current undocumented immigration crisis, touching on topics such as the U.S.-Mexico border wall, the effects of family separation at the border, deportation, and DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

Enough with Catcalling: What is the Place of Women in the Cities?/Chega de Fiu Fiu will be shown at 3 p.m. This documentary, shown in Portuguese with English subtitles, explores the public space as a place of violence, especially sexual harassment – and analyzes how campaigns promoted by activists and feminists have changed power relationships between men and women in the streets and on the internet in Brazil.

The film series wraps up with Rethinking Cuban Civil Society: Something Deeper than the Truth, which will be shown at 5 p.m. Rethinking Cuban Civil Society, shown in Spanish with English subtitles, explores a critical issue in Cuba’s ongoing evolution, raising questions about the role of independent organizations and what it will take for them to flourish under the current regime.

All of the films are free and open to the public, and will be shown with English subtitles. For further information visit esu.edu/latinofilmseries or contact Annie Mendoza, Ph.D., associate professor of modern languages at 570-422-3842 or email amendoza@esu.edu.
