East Stroudsburg University’s Jazz Ensemble will present a Winter Jazz Concert on Wednesday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Cecilia S. Cohen Recital Hall of the university’s Fine and Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite Streets, East Stroudsburg.
“This semester we are a doing a mix of repertoire,” explained Matt Vashlishan, D.M.A., coordinator of the Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection and director of the Ensemble. “We are playing a few selections from the Count Basie Band, all the way to “I.G.Y.” by Steely Dan’s Donald Fagan, as well as “Nutville” by Horace Silver, arranged in the style of the famous Buddy Rich big band version.”
Saxophonist C.J. Magann, a sophomore from Tannersville, Pa. majoring in art + design who has been a member of the Ensemble for two years, described the program as “pretty fun. The ’70s and ’80s selections are very groovy and laid back, and the Count Basie pieces are very distinct from the others.”
The concert, sponsored by the Department of Theatre, is open to the public at no cost. For more information about the concert, please email esuarts@esu.edu or call the Fine Arts and Performing Arts Events Line at 570-422-3483.
