Welsh, Ph.D., and ESU’s One Book, One Campus committee are inviting students, faculty, staff and community members to a special public appearance by noted author Drew Magary. He will speak at ESU on Tuesday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts.

Magary is a correspondent for GQ and a columnist for Deadspin. He also has contributed to New York Magazine, NPR, NBA, Maxim, The Atlantic, Bon Appetit, The Huffington Post, Gawker, Rolling Stone, Yahoo! and Comedy Central. He has been a regular guest on MSNBC as well as countless radio stations.

Magary’s critically acclaimed novel, The Postmortal, was nominated for the 2012 Philip K. Dick award and the 2012 Arthur C. Clarke award. The fictional novel centers on a future where a cure for aging is discovered, and after much political and moral debate, is made available to people worldwide. Immortality, however, comes with its own unique problems, including evil green people, government euthanasia programs, a disturbing new religious cult and other horrors. The Postmortal is a thriller that envisions a pre-apocalyptic world so real that it is completely terrifying.

“Drew Magary is, without question, one of the best writers in the country,” wrote Jeff Pearlman, a New York Times best-selling author of six books who is also a former Sports Illustrated senior writer, a former ESPN.com columnist and a former staff writer for Newsday and The (Nashville) Tennessean. “Yes, his stuff can be simultaneously funny and poignant. What I dig most, however, is the smoothness of it all. When I wrap up reading Magary’s work, I often wonder where the time went.”

The Postmortal is a unique choice this year because it is currently out of print. However, anyone interested in reading it can purchase a copy from ESU’s bookstore or by visiting http://esu.edu/onebook.

The One Book, One Campus program debuted at ESU in 2013 when Wes Moore, the author of The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, visited campus. Each fall, One Book will select a book worthy of close attention for students, faculty, staff and administrators to read and engage together. The purpose is to promote reading and to unify ESU’s campus through shared classroom content, group discussions, club activities, sidewalk conversations and an essay competition.

For more information about Magary’s upcoming visit to ESU, which is open to the public at no cost, contact Peter Pruim, Ph.D., ESU professor of philosophy and religious studies, at 570-422-3529 or ppruim@esu.edu.

Critically Acclaimed Author Drew Magary Slated to Visit ESU on Tuesday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m.

[143,22,42

post-10152","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community","category-facebook","category-news-release
