{"id":10499,"date":"2014-09-19T11:09:09","date_gmt":"2014-09-19T15:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quantumnew.esu.edu\/insider\/?p=10499"},"modified":"2016-06-16T11:54:32","modified_gmt":"2016-06-16T15:54:32","slug":"esu-departments-of-music-and-theatre-present-talk-macbeth-the-play-the-opera-and-the-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantum.esu.edu\/insider\/esu-departments-of-music-and-theatre-present-talk-macbeth-the-play-the-opera-and-the-film\/","title":{"rendered":"ESU Departments of Music and Theatre Present Talk, Macbeth: The Play, The Opera, and The Film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Opera enthusiast Eugene Galperin, Ph.D., East Stroudsburg University assistant professor of mathematics, will present <em>Macbeth: The Play, the Opera, and the Film<\/em> on October 8 at 7:00 p.m. This presentation will be held in the Dale Snow Theatre of ESU\u2019s Fine &amp; Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg.<\/p>\n<p>In his talk, Galperin will discuss how 19<sup>th<\/sup> century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi helped advance Shakespeare revival by creating <em>Macbeth<\/em>, his first true operatic masterpiece. Roman Polanski\u2019s 1971 classic film adaptation will also be discussed in Galperin\u2019s presentation, which is open to the public at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>One of most famous of all of Shakespeare\u2019s tragedies, <em>Macbeth <\/em>explores the corrosive psychological and political effects that follow when evil is chosen as a way to fulfill the ambition for power. Verdi\u2019s dark-hued musical rendition of the classic story is the first genuine music drama in the history of western art.<\/p>\n<p>The program, geared toward people with little or no knowledge of opera, will provide an introduction to the Metropolitan Opera production of <em>Macbeth<\/em> to be screened at 12:55 p.m. on October 11, and at 6:30 p.m. on October 15 at the Cinemark Theater in Stroud Mall. These Cinemark screenings are part of the Metropolitan Opera\u2019s Live-in-HD series designed to make reputable opera productions accessible to audiences throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese broadcasts have been going on for years and most students haven\u2019t been aware,\u201d Galperin said. \u201cI attempted to spark some interest and increase attendance of these broadcasts. Last year, I gave six such talks.
