East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania\u2019s Service Learning Initiative and Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will host a Student Reflection Symposium on Thursday, November 6 at 2 p.m. in Lower Dansbury.<\/p>\n
Eight panelists, including Glenn Geiser-Getz, Ph.D., professor of communication studies, Olivia Carducci, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics, Chin Hu, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology, LuAnn Magnuson, Ph.D., assistant professor of speech-language pathology, Peng Zhang, Ph.D., assistant professor of physical education, Gene White, Ph.D., department chair of physical education, Elaine Shuey, Ph.D., associate professor of speech-language pathology, and Grant Rauch, PACC Vista member, will discuss how critical it is for \u00a0students to reflect on their experiences in the college classroom and in the community.\u00a0 They will identify best practices for using student reflection to deepen learning, discuss the role of assessment, and present examples of how to use reflection in college courses.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is critical to document the benefits of our work with students so that we know they understand course content and they understand the relationship between their learning and the needs of the community,\u201d said Glenn Geiser-Getz, Ph.D., professor of communication studies at ESU.<\/p>\n
The symposium is an effort that aligns with the university\u2019s strategic plan and is meant to benefit both students and the community, according to Geiser-Getz.<\/p>\n
The eight panelists hope their faculty colleagues will encourage students to seek out opportunities to apply classroom knowledge, interact with distinctive and diverse populations, and serve local and regional communities.<\/p>\n
\u201cFaculty have a critical role to play here, as they provide the conceptual knowledge and student mentoring that makes it possible to bring the classroom into the community and the community into the classroom,\u201d Geiser-Getz said.<\/p>\n
The Civic Engagement Seminar Grant-American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU) will be funding the programs, advertisements, and refreshments for the event.<\/p>\n
