Elaine Shuey, Ph.D., ESU professor and chair of speech-language pathology, will be the grand marshal for East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania\u2019s commencement ceremony at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2014 in Koehler Fieldhouse.<\/p>\n
Dr. Shuey became a faculty member at East Stroudsburg University in 1984. She earned her bachelor\u2019s degree from Clarion State College, and her master\u2019s and doctoral degrees from Kent State University.<\/p>\n
Upon her arrival on campus, Dr. Shuey helped develop ESU\u2019s graduate program in speech-language pathology. Her specialty areas include voice disorders, speech science, and communication and aging.<\/p>\n
Dr. Shuey extends her knowledge outside the classroom by supervising graduate students in their work at the ESU Speech and Hearing Center and undergraduate students completing their internships for the gerontology concentration, for which she is the coordinator.\u00a0 She is also the adviser to the gerontology honor society, Sigma Phi Omega.<\/p>\n
Outside of the ESU campus, Dr. Shuey serves on the Pennsylvania Speech-Language-Hearing Association\u2019s (PSHA) Scholarship Committee, the professional organization for speech-language pathologists and audiologists in the state.\u00a0 In her time with PSHA she served as president, where she organized the first board meetings to be conducted via teleconference \u2014saving both time and money for the organization and board members.\u00a0 Additionally, she served on the executive board of the Northeastern Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Pennsylvania for 30 years and has been its secretary for 21 years.\u00a0 For her services in the community, she has received nine awards for continuing education from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.<\/p>\n
A 21-year breast cancer survivor, Dr. Shuey made it her personal goal to fundraise for the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and was recently accepted to the BlueCross of Northeastern PA\u2019s 2015 Gallery of Hope.\u00a0 Her volunteer efforts are widespread throughout the community and include volunteering for the Antoine Dutot School and Museum in Delaware Water Gap, 16 years of service on the board of directors of VNA\/Hospice of Monroe County, and serving as a member of the board of directors for the Monroe Animal League.\u00a0 She sings in two choirs at Zion United Church of Christ and is also the substitute organist at that church and at other area churches.<\/p>\n
