{"id":11543,"date":"2015-01-30T17:19:33","date_gmt":"2015-01-30T22:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quantumnew.esu.edu\/insider\/?p=11543"},"modified":"2016-06-14T14:02:33","modified_gmt":"2016-06-14T18:02:33","slug":"esu-nursing-students-participate-in-national-point-in-time-count","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantum.esu.edu\/insider\/esu-nursing-students-participate-in-national-point-in-time-count\/","title":{"rendered":"ESU Nursing Students Participate in National Point in Time Count"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"newshide\" style=\"width: 100%; max-width: 100%;\" src=\"http:\/\/quantumnew.esu.edu\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pt-700x300.jpg\" alt=\"pt-700x300\" \/><br \/>\nLori Pierangeli, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, wanted her students to open their eyes to a population that doesn\u2019t always have a place to sleep at night.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 25 students participated in this winter\u2019s National Point in Time Count (PIT), which began on January 28. The PIT, an annual count of unsheltered homeless people in Monroe County, is required nationally by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development during the last 10 days of January. The data collected by the count determines how much funding to allocate toward community efforts to help the homeless.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Dr. Pierangeli introduced her upper level Community Health Nursing class to the count and about 30 students and instructors agreed to volunteer. After a positive reaction from her students, she decided to make the count part of the students\u2019 clinical hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted nursing students to have the opportunity to learn what it\u2019s like to be in this situation,\u201d she said. \u201cThey need to learn about the community and the strengths and needs that exist within the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Pierangeli encourages the students to interact with and get to know some of the homeless people through participation in community meals. Part of the count includes interviews, with one of the first questions being, \u201cWhere will you sleep tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Pierangeli surveyed the students prior to the count to determine how knowledgeable and comfortable they are with the homeless population.
