East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) honored 288 students during the 34th Annual Honors Convocation held Friday, April 10, in the Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts. The Honors Convocation is sponsored by the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) with a grant from the ESU Office of Academic Affairs.<\/p>\n
The keynote address was presented by Mary Anne Moore, Ph.D., professor emerita of physics.\u00a0Dr. Moore joined ESU in 1999. She was the university\u2019s only female physicist. She was granted professor emerita in May of 2014.\u00a0After her retirement, she wrote her first spy novel, inspired by a trip she took to South Africa. Dr. Moore spends her time volunteering at the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center. \u201cI was surprised and honored to be named volunteer of the year,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is so rewarding to volunteer and retirement gave me the extra time to give to them.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Honors Convocation also welcomed student speaker Hunter Fogel, a senior majoring in English from East Stroudsburg, Pa. Fogel\u2019 s passions lie with words and theatre. In his time at the university, he was a dramaturg, a position within theatre that deals mainly with research and the development of plays, for both Wizard of Oz<\/em> and A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream.<\/em> Last year, Fogel traveled to\u00a0 Peru, where he spent four weeks teaching English in Cuzco.<\/p>\n \u201cI really like finding a way to interact with cultures, learn their language and give back to their community,\u201d he said. Fogel is set to graduate in May of 2015 magna cum laude<\/em>, boasting a 3.79 GPA.<\/p>\n Like Fogel, the 288 students honored at the convocation have had great achievements at the university.
