Three East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania students were selected to attend a program which seeks to educate and empower young women for future political participation and leadership. The seminar titled \u201cNational Education for Women\u2019s (NEW) Leadership in Pennsylvania\u201d addresses the under representation of women in the political arena by focusing on the role of women in politics and policy making in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
The NEW Leadership program \u2014 which is part of a national network of programs developed by the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University in N.J. \u2014\u00a0 is a six-day, concentrated curriculum for female students attending colleges and universities throughout Pennsylvania. Participants learned about networking, the need for women\u2019s leadership in the political process and participated in skills-building workshops.<\/p>\n
Students selected from ESU were Chantal Fulgencio, a senior majoring in political science, French and Spanish from Stroudsburg, Pa.,\u00a0 Allison Simon, a senior majoring in political science from Garrison, N.Y., and Blair Williams, a senior majoring in political science from Mill Rift, Pa. Each year approximately 35 students from colleges and universities across Pennsylvania are selected to attend. In the past five years, 10 ESU students have been accepted into the program.<\/p>\n
Participants toured the Capitol in Harrisburg and heard from successful women leaders about politics and public policy. Sessions included, \u201cWhy YOU Should Consider Running for Office,\u201d \u201cWhat is Your Leadership Style,\u201d and \u201cMaking a Difference: Women in the General Assembly.\u201d Students were able to network with State Representatives Dan Frankel, Former Representative Erin Molchany, Former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice\u00a0Cynthia Baldwin, and Senator Jay Costa.<\/p>\n
