{"id":12960,"date":"2015-10-05T10:35:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T14:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quantumnew.esu.edu\/insider\/?p=12960"},"modified":"2015-10-09T10:00:20","modified_gmt":"2015-10-09T14:00:20","slug":"health-of-monroe-countys-area-agency-on-aging-kicks-off-breast-cancer-awareness-month-with-the-15th-annual-pink-light-walk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantum.esu.edu\/insider\/health-of-monroe-countys-area-agency-on-aging-kicks-off-breast-cancer-awareness-month-with-the-15th-annual-pink-light-walk\/","title":{"rendered":"Health of Monroe County&#8217;s Area Agency on Aging Kicks Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the 15th Annual Pink Light Walk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"newshide\" style=\"width: 100%; max-width: 900px;\" src=\"http:\/\/quantumnew.esu.edu\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Pink-Light-Walk.jpg\" alt=\"Pink Light Walk\" \/>Pocono Medical Center (PMC) and East Stroudsburg University (ESU) are proud to host the 15th annual Pink Light Walk, which will be held on Thursday, October 8 at 6 p.m. In collaboration with Pocono Medical Center\u2019s Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center, Prime Time Health of Monroe County\u2019s Area Agency on Aging, East Stroudsburg University, and the American Cancer Society, the walk is held to increase awareness for breast cancer during the month of October.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Pink Light Walk is organized by the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center\u2019s Breast Health Nurse Navigator Lutchana Beckford and a committee from the community. \u201cThe Pink Light Walk is a celebratory event hosted by Pocono Medical Center and ESU to celebrate the journey of people who have been touched by breast cancer in our community,\u201d said Beckford.<\/p>\n<p>The honorary spokesperson for this year\u2019s Pink Light Walk, Annie Scully, is a proud survivor and front end specialist who registers patients at PMC\u2019s Bartonsville Breast Health Center.\u00a0Scully\u2019s personal experience with breast cancer is inspiring to the patients she interacts with. \u201cFive times a week I am hugging my patients, giving them hope that the battle can be won,\u201d said Scully.<\/p>\n<p>The Scully family has a history of breast cancer. Annie received yearly mammogram screenings and always performed self-examinations. In March 2014, Scully faced her biggest fear. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. \u201cIt was a rollercoaster ride. You can\u2019t let fear consume you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Pink Light Walk will start at the Warren E. \u201955 and Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center located on Normal Street of ESU\u2019s campus and will end at the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center located on 181 East Brown Street, East Stroudsburg, Pa. The walk will occur rain or shine.<\/p>\n<p>At 5 p.m., just prior to the walk, an education seminar will be held in the ESU Science and Technology Center. The walk will begin at 6 p.m. then Scully will speak about the importance of early detection for breast cancer at the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center \u201cIt is a time to honor our survivors and bring awareness to breast cancer as Pocono Medical Center strives to build a healthier community by providing education on breast cancer \u2013 as early detection saves lives,\u201d said Beckford. Pocono Medical Center offers a free mammogram voucher program service.<\/p>\n<p>The Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center is a member of the Jefferson Cancer Network, which provides the oncology specialists at the Hughes Cancer Center with access to the latest proven treatment protocols as well as specialized educational programs and conferences. The Hughes Cancer Center is a service of Pocono Medical Center, which is part of Pocono Health System.<\/p>\n<p>Pocono Medical Center is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year in East Stroudsburg. With more than 230 physicians and more than 1,900 staff members, it is one of Monroe County\u2019s oldest and largest employers, offering a full complement of clinical and acute care services for Monroe and surrounding communities. It holds an \u201cA\u201d rating from the Leapfrog Group, among the nation\u2019s premier advocates for patient safety and was recently recognized as being among the top 10% in Pennsylvania and as a Best Regional Hospital by U.S. News &amp; World Report. Pocono Medical Center\u2019s ESSA Heart and Vascular Institute offers the full breadth and depth of cardiovascular services, including diagnostic cardiac catheterization, cardiac angioplasty, open-heart surgery, and minimally invasive heart procedures as well as vascular surgery and cardiac rehabilitation services. The Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center at PMC offers a variety of treatments and alternatives, including state-of-the-art radiation therapy equipment. Pocono Medical Center is a fully accredited Level III Trauma Center.<\/p>\n<p>East Stroudsburg University, a comprehensive university in northeastern Pennsylvania offering 56 undergraduate and 24 graduate degrees, is one of the 14 institutions in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
