{"id":14269,"date":"2016-05-06T00:00:45","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T04:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quantumnew.esu.edu\/insider\/?p=14269"},"modified":"2016-05-06T11:37:27","modified_gmt":"2016-05-06T15:37:27","slug":"esu-physics-department-to-host-observation-of-transit-of-mercury-monday-may-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantum.esu.edu\/insider\/esu-physics-department-to-host-observation-of-transit-of-mercury-monday-may-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Physics Department to Host Observation of Transit of Mercury Monday, May 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Photo courtesy of NASA<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The physics department at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania invites the public to observe a celestial event known as the Transit of Mercury on Monday, May 9, 2016 between 12 noon and 2:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>A transit can be considered a \u201cmini-eclipse,\u201d where the planet Mercury passes directly between the sun and earth.\u00a0The tiny silhouette of Mercury takes several hours to cross the sun\u2019s disk, and can only be observed with a telescope with a safe solar filter, such as the solar telescope at ESU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mercury Transit is extremely rare, occurring only 13 times each century,\u201d said David Buckley, Ph.D., professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esu.edu\/academics\/departments\/physics\/index.cfm\">physics<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting to be able to share such a unique event with our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to NASA, the Transit of Mercury was a valuable tool for astronomers in past centuries, allowing them to estimate the planet\u2019s size and distance between the earth and the sun.
