{"id":15480,"date":"2017-03-21T10:29:44","date_gmt":"2017-03-21T14:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quantumnew.esu.edu\/insider\/?p=15480"},"modified":"2017-03-21T10:30:21","modified_gmt":"2017-03-21T14:30:21","slug":"provosts-colloquium-series-continues-with-proving-patriotism-latino-military-service-in-the-united-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantum.esu.edu\/insider\/provosts-colloquium-series-continues-with-proving-patriotism-latino-military-service-in-the-united-states\/","title":{"rendered":"Provost\u2019s Colloquium Series Continues with Proving Patriotism: Latino Military Service in the United States"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of East Stroudsburg University\u2019s Spring 2017 Provost\u2019s Colloquium Series, Adam McGlynn, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, will give a presentation titled <em>Proving Patriotism: Latino Military Service in the United States<\/em> on Wednesday, March 29, at 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Beers Lecture Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Using original survey data of Latino military veterans in the southwestern United States, Dr. McGlynn will discuss how he and Dr. Jessica Lavariega Monforti, examined how these veterans perceive their military service, and specifically, whether in a time when the Latino community is facing increased discrimination and questioning of their citizenship and loyalty to the United States, if service in the U.S. military led to increased acceptance and recognition of citizenship for Latino veterans.<\/p>\n<p>The authors posit that military service can be viewed as the ultimate act of patriotism and thus should negate any questioning of one\u2019s loyalty to their country, regardless of ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p>McGlynn\u2019s main fields of research are Latino politics and education policy. He is an elected member of the Nazareth Area School Board and has published articles in the <em>American Journal of Political Science<\/em>, <em>PS: Political Science and Politics<\/em>, the <em>Social Science Journal<\/em> and the <em>State and Local Government Review<\/em>.
