Reinert, a graduating senior majoring in communication sciences and disorders from Saint Simons Island, Ga., was selected from a pool of student speaker candidates to serve as East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s undergraduate student speaker for the winter commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 16, at 9:45 a.m. in Koehler Fieldhouse. Undergraduate student speaker candidates must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average entering the fall semester; a demonstrated record of service to the university community and a record of citizenship and cooperation; demonstrated evidence of meaningful extra/co-curricular involvement and must be in good academic standing.

Reinert came to ESU as a transfer student after taking a year and a half medical withdrawal. “Before I got sick I had a plan,” Reinert said. “I wanted to finish school early, go to grad school, and be working in my field by the time I was 24 years old. My plan fell through and I felt like a failure.”

That feeling didn’t last long. Once Reinert began her course work at ESU she started taking advantage of all ESU had to offer. She is a resident advisor, a member of ESU PRIDE, a volunteer at Spring Village Pocono Senior Living Facility where she coordinates activities for the residents, and a member of the National Student Speech-Language and Hearing Association. Reinert attended the Pennsylvania Hard of Hearing Expo and the Pennsylvania Speech-Language and Hearing Association Convention as a student at ESU.

Her experiences reach beyond the classroom. “I went on a trip to the Museum of African American History and Culture, I sat on a panel discussing the Women’s March on Washington, and I studied abroad in Lund, Sweden,” Reinert said.

“The opportunities ESU has afforded me, have truly changed me as a person,” she said.

Megan U.
