As part of East Stroudsburg University\u2019s Provost\u2019s Colloquium Series, Brigitte Cypress, Ed.D., associate professor of\u00a0 nursing, will present, \u201cQualitative Research: Linking Findings to Praxis, Theory, Policy and Evidence-Based Practice\u201d in Beers Lecture Hall on Wednesday, April 11, 2018\u00a0 from 5:30 \u2013 7:00 p.m.<\/p>\n
Dr. Cypress is a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN), qualitative researcher and phenomenologist. She has conducted three research studies focusing on patient-family-nurse critical care lived experiences during critical illness in the intensive care unit and emergency department. Findings from these studies showed family presence as a significant aspect of patient-centeredness.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a critical nurse for many years, I have worked with patients and their families including the nurses who take care of them,\u201d Cypress said. \u201cCritical illness and an admission to an intensive care unit is an extremely stressful experience that may result in emotional turmoil, high level of stress, role conflict, interruption of normal home routines and potential changes in relationships among patients and family members.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cypress will discuss the findings from her studies and how to actively involve the patient\u2019s family in all aspects of the care, include visiting hours, interdisciplinary conferences, rounds and discharge planning, and allowing them to be present during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.<\/p>\n
