East Stroudsburg University\u2019s Provost\u2019s Colloquium Series, an intellectual experience that promotes dialogue among ESU faculty, staff, students, and community, continues with a round table discussion led by Bonnie Green, Ph.D., professor of psychology, James Hunt, Ph.D., associate professor of biological sciences, Michael P. Doherty, Ph.D., department chair and professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and Jerry Ross, Ph.D., associate professor of physics. The presentation \u201cFailure: The Secret to Success\u201d will take place on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. in Beers Lecture Hall.<\/p>\n
The goal of ESU’s Council for Undergraduate Research and Sigma Xi, the honor society for the sciences, is to facilitate students’ success. In doing so, it is recognized that students’ aversion to failure may limit their full potential. Yet, research on grit\u2014defined as a sustained effort towards obtaining a long term goal\u2014highlights the importance of persevering through failure. Students often look at their professors and see success. Professors\u2019 CVs are filled with successfully funded grants, accepted publications, and advanced degrees they have achieved. They are known by their successes. Yet, behind the most successful individuals are often multiple failures that are mostly obscured from students and the public.<\/p>\n
This presentation will begin with a round table discussion about research on failure and its relationship with success. It will then discuss related experiences around failure in science that lead to success and conclude with an in depth discussion with the audience on this topic.<\/p>\n
