East Stroudsburg University\u2019s Provost\u2019s Colloquium Series, an intellectual experience that promotes dialogue among ESU faculty, staff, students, and community, continues with a presentation by Laura Kieselbach, Ph.D., assistant professor of English. The presentation \u201cDiscussing Cultural Perceptions of Learning and Teaching\u201d, will take place on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. in Beers Lecture Hall.<\/p>\n
According to Dr. Kieselbach, teachers across the United States are in a crucial position to help their students develop a personal, fair, and equitable understanding of all people and cultures. Kieselbach\u2019s research focuses on culturally relevant teaching and includes questions such as \u201cHow do we first make students feel valued in their own culture and in the classroom?\u201d and \u201cHow do we help students master competency of their own culture and someone else\u2019s?\u201d Current instructional practices in multicultural education are often artificial and brief, lead to stereotypical ideas, and reduce a culture to a narrow lens viewed by the dominant culture in a society. Following an audience dialogue about important comments shared by participants in her research, Kieslebach will share some success stories from her own practices, and the student growth that has resulted from implementing the strategy of culturally relevant teaching.<\/p>\n
