{"id":18770,"date":"2019-04-29T10:31:42","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T14:31:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quantumnew.esu.edu\/insider\/?p=18770"},"modified":"2019-04-29T10:31:42","modified_gmt":"2019-04-29T14:31:42","slug":"musical-theatre-organization-to-present-broadway-reimagined-a-miscast-cabaret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantum.esu.edu\/insider\/musical-theatre-organization-to-present-broadway-reimagined-a-miscast-cabaret\/","title":{"rendered":"Musical Theatre Organization to Present Broadway Reimagined: A Miscast Cabaret"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>East Stroudsburg University\u2019s Musical Theatre Organization (MTO) decided to take an unconventional approach to select the songs for this year\u2019s cabaret, <em>Broadway Reimagined: A Miscast Cabaret<\/em>, being presented Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at ESU\u2019s Fine and Performing Arts Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a musical, a song is performed by a specific character with certain predetermined characteristics\u2014age, gender, ethnicity\u2014and if you don\u2019t fit the role, you probably won\u2019t get to sing it onstage,\u201d explained Jalon Mathis, a sophomore majoring in musical theatre, and vice president of MTO from Allentown, Pa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe decided to reimagine the songs with nontraditional casting, so that the performers could have fun with the song and\u00a0 bring a new perspective to the piece,\u201d Mathis said.<\/p>\n<p>Deijah Faulkner, a junior majoring in musical theatre from Long Island, N.Y., chose to sing \u201cWaving Through a Window\u201d from the musical <em>Dear Evan Hansen<\/em>. \u201cThe song was written for an anxious, insecure, lonely, teenage boy,\u201d she said, \u201cand I have an outgoing personality.\u00a0 The piece helps me get in touch with my softer side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For his solo, Na\u2019zir Postell, a freshman majoring in musical theatre from Levittown, Pa., will be singing \u201cNever Enough\u201d from <em>The Greatest Showman<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cIn the musical, the character of Jenny Lind, the famous opera singer brought to America by P.T. Barnum, sings this number because she can never get enough of life,\u201d he said, \u201cand I certainly can agree with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MTO president Marcell McKenzie, a senior majoring in musical theatre from Kunkletown, Pa., directed and choreographed the production. \u201cThere are more than 20 performers this year, including new members who have brought lots of energy to the group,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to solos, the production has small group numbers &#8211; some all-female, some all-male, and some full ensemble &#8211; with lots of dancing,\u201d McKenzie said. One of his favorite group numbers is \u201cSomething About This Night\u201d from <em>Finding Neverland<\/em> because \u201cit features many intricate dance moves.
