Cohen Recital Hall of the university\u2019s Fine &amp; Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg. The performance is open to the public at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur program will feature music of remembrance, perseverance and, of course, Halloween,\u201d said Brian Hodge, director of Warrior Bands, who will be directing both musical groups for the concert. \u201cMussorgsky\u2019s <em>Night on Bald Mountain<\/em>, best known from its inclusion in the 1940s Disney film <em>Fantasia,<\/em> serves as a highly energetic opening for this concert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A key part of the presentation is the return of ESU\u2019s University Choir to active status.\u00a0\u201cWhen I entered ESU as a freshman, the choir had recently been discontinued,\u201d said choir member Ming Li Goldston, a senior from East Stroudsburg majoring in English and theatre. \u201cI feel fortunate that the choir is starting again because now I can use all my previous choral training to help get the program reestablished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe jazzy mashup of Johnny Mercer\u2019s \u201cWhen October Goes\u201d and \u201cAutumn Leaves\u201d showcases the diversity of the choir\u2019s abilities,\u201d Goldston said.\u00a0\u201cThe a cappella rendition of \u201cMake Them Hear You,\u201d from the musical <em>Ragtime,<\/em> is another favorite of mine. Creating the vocal balance is complicated, and we have to work hard,\u201d she said. \u201cThe song\u2019s message is very important in this social climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For choir member Rebecca Mullen, a junior majoring in biology from Levittown, Pa., the song \u201cBeliever,\u201d made famous by the rock group Imagine Dragons, aids her in increasing her musical ability. \u201cI\u2019m learning how to read music, and this pop song is fast-paced and has a lot of triplets so it reinforces that skill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Choir member Nadia Wright, a sophomore from York, Pa. majoring in early childhood education, is looking forward to performing a medley from the musical <em>Sweeney Todd<\/em> by Stephen Sondheim. \u201cSondheim is a challenging composer and this is the only medley on the program,\u201d she said. \u201cThe spookiness of the musical really fits with the concert\u2019s October theme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another work linked to the concert\u2019s theme is <em>Godzilla Eats Las Vegas<\/em>, a programmatic tone-poem for wind band by American composer Eric Whitacre. \u201cDrawing on a mixture of influences from popular media, <em>Godzilla Eats Las Vegas<\/em> presents a musical tale of the B-movie monster rampaging through the City of Sin,\u201d Hodge explained. \u201cThe piece helped establish Whitacre as an innovator in style and texture for wind bands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program will also include performances of a Harry Potter Symphonic Suite, and \u201cAllerseelen\u201d by Richard Strauss by the band, and \u201cHigh Hopes\u201d by Panic! at the Disco by the choir. \u201cThere\u2019s something for everyone in this program,\u201d Goldston said. \u201cThe choir is looking forward to presenting this eclectic mixture for our first audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the program, email <a href=\"mailto:esuarts@esu.edu\">esuarts@esu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ESU\u2019s Concert Band and the newly reconstituted University Choir will combine their talents to present a concert, <em>The Spirits of October<\/em>, Sunday, October 27 at 3:30 p.m. in Cecilia S.
