{"id":2250,"date":"2012-04-30T14:12:31","date_gmt":"2012-04-30T19:12:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www4.esu.edu\/insider\/?p=2250"},"modified":"2012-04-30T14:12:31","modified_gmt":"2012-04-30T19:12:31","slug":"an-invitation-to-the-general-public-view-works-of-late-local-artist-sterling-strauser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantum.esu.edu\/insider\/an-invitation-to-the-general-public-view-works-of-late-local-artist-sterling-strauser\/","title":{"rendered":"An Invitation To The General Public &#8211; View Works of Late Local Artist Sterling Strauser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>East Stroudsburg University invites the general public to view works of the late acclaimed, self-taught artist Sterling Strauser at no cost from May 7 to 11 at The Sterling Strauser Gallery at ESU, located at 562 Independence Road, East Stroudsburg, Pa.\u00a0 The gallery will open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Gallery, which officially opened on Tuesday, May 1, features the works of Strauser, who lived and painted in East Stroudsburg from 1928 to 1995.\u00a0 The Gallery was made possible thanks to a generous donation of 114 of Strauser\u2019s paintings by Grey and Linda Carter and family of McLean, Va. Currently in a temporary location, the gallery will have a permanent home in ESU\u2019s Keystone Center, when construction of\u00a0 Phase I\u00a0 is completed in 2015.<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sterling Boyd Strauser (1907 \u2013 1995), whose German name means \u201cone who binds the flowers,\u201d was born in Bloomsburg, Pa., in 1907, and later moved to East Stroudsburg, Pa., with his wife, Dorothy. Sterling and Dorothy were quick to influence the arts throughout the Pocono Region, both as well-known collectors and promoters of folk and outsider art.<\/p>\n<p>ESU\u2019s Strauser collection features \u201cSpring is Bursting Out,\u201d as well as his self-portrait and some of his most iconic pieces such as \u201cThe Circus,\u201d \u201cMother\u2019s Funeral,\u201d \u201cNancy Emma,\u201d his signature florals, and many other spectacular works.<\/p>\n<p>Strauser\u2019s art is included in the permanent collections of the American Museum in Bath, England; the Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, Pa.; Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa.; Everhart Museum, Scranton, Pa.; Cheekwood Museum and Vanderbilt University, both in Nashville, Tenn.; Maier Museum of Art, Lynchburg, Va.; and, numerous private and corporate collections.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his painting, Strauser served as a teacher and principal of the grade school in Mount Pocono from 1928 to 1929.\u00a0 He also worked at the International Boiler Works in East Stroudsburg where he began as a shipping clerk in 1930 and retired as company secretary in 1962.<\/p>\n<p>Philanthropist Grey Carter and his wife, Linda, are ardent art dealers and collectors, pleased to honor Sterling Strauser by donating the founding collection of his art to East Stroudsburg University. Grey is a private art dealer and artist\u2019s representative.
