The East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) Theatre Department will be presenting Edward Albee\u2019s The Goat or Who is Sylvia?,<\/i> winner of the 2002 Tony and Drama Desk awards for best drama.<\/p>\n
Curtain times for the play are 8 p.m. March 5-9 and 2 p.m. March 10.\u00a0 All performances are at the Smith-McFarland Theatre of the university\u2019s Fine and Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg.\u00a0 Because of adult language and content <\/i>this play is recommended for mature audiences only.<\/i>\u00a0<\/p>\n
The play is a very dark comedy that focuses on the limits of an ostensibly liberal society.\u00a0 In the piece, a very successful architect is forced to confess to his wife and son that he\u2019s involved in a relationship that will probably destroy his marriage, his career, and his life.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe great central scene in which husband and wife confront each other recalls Who\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf<\/i>? in both its emotional intemperance and the shocking humour of its invective,\u201d noted British critic Charles Spencer.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAlbee\u2019s power as a playwright is evident in the couple\u2019s blistering dialogue,\u201d said Susan P. O\u2019Hearn, professor of theatre and director of the production. \u201cLanguage is a tool that should bring them closer.\u00a0 Ultimately, it fails.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201cFour decades after Virginia Woolf<\/i> sent shock waves through the mainstream theater,\u201d New York Times<\/i> critic Ben Brantley noted, \u201cMr. Albee still asks questions that no other major American dramatist dares to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n
Yoshinori Tanokura, assistant professor of theatre, designed the sets and costumes for the production. Guest designer Benjamin Weill created the lighting for the piece.<\/p>\n
General admission is $12; $10 for senior citizens, faculty, and staff with ID; and $7 students with ID.<\/p>\n
