Many people mistakenly view opera as an elite art form detached from the modern world or one that is available only to those in a few select cities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Opera enthusiast Eugene Galperin, Ph.D., an assistant professor of mathematics at ESU, will address these concerns in a presentation, \u201cWhy is Opera Still Relevant to us Today?: How to See Tosca<\/i> Without Leaving Town\u201d on Friday, November 8, at 2 p.m. in the Dale Snow Theatre of East Stroudsburg University\u2019s Fine and Performing Arts Center on Normal and Marguerite Streets. The presentation is open to the public at no cost.<\/p>\n
The program, geared toward people with little or no knowledge of opera, will examine its relevance in today\u2019s society and provide an introduction to Puccini\u2019s Tosca,<\/i> a Metropolitan Opera production that will be screened November 9 and 13 at Cinemark in the Stroud Mall.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThese broadcasts have been going on for years and most students haven\u2019t been aware,\u201d Galperin said. \u201cI am attempting to spark some interest and increase attendance of these broadcasts.\u201d<\/p>\n
One of the mainstays of the opera repertory, Tosca, <\/i>is a gripping tale of love, villainy and revenge by the beloved opera composer Giacomo Puccini.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Cinemark screenings are part of the Metropolitan Opera\u2019s Live-In-HD series designed to make outstanding opera productions accessible to audiences throughout the world. The first showing is at 12:55 p.m. on November 9; the encore presentation is at 6:30 p.m. on November 13.<\/p>\n
