While many people are familiar with the award-winning musical Rent,<\/i> not everyone knows that the musical\u2019s story of young artists who meet, flirt, fall in love and break up, and come back together, draws its characters and inspiration from the popular opera \u201cLa Boheme.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a talk, \u201cLa Boheme<\/i> – The Most Performed Opera in the Repertoire,\u201d opera enthusiast Eugene Galperin, Ph.D., an assistant professor of mathematics at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, will explore the timeless story and touching characters of the opera, which is known for its lush melodies.<\/p>\n
The presentation is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 2 in the Dale Snow Theatre of ESU\u2019s Fine and Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets. It is open to the public at no cost.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The talk, the fifth presentation of the lecture series, \u201cWhy Opera Still is Relevant Today,\u201d is geared toward people with little or no knowledge of opera and will provide an introduction to Giacomo Puccini’s \u201cLa Boheme,\u201d one of the Metropolitan Opera\u2019s Live-In-HD series designed to make outstanding opera productions accessible to audiences throughout the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cLa Boheme\u201d<\/i> will be screened Saturday, April 5, at 12:55 p.m. and Wednesday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. at Cinemark Theater in the Stroud Mall.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThese broadcasts have been going on for years and most students haven\u2019t been aware,\u201d Galperin said. \u201cI attempted to spark some interest and increase attendance of these broadcasts. After my previous four talks during the past year, several students and community members attended the broadcast for the first time.\u00a0That was encouraging, and I would like to keep it going.\u201d<\/p>\n
