The students attended the National Education for Women’s (NEW) Leadership Pennsylvania™ institute at the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa. The NEW program is a six-day, concentrated curriculum for female students attending colleges and universities throughout Pennsylvania. Participants learned about networking, the need for women’s leadership in the political process and participated in skills-building workshops.

The ESU three students chosen to attend were Linda St. Cyr, a junior from Blakeslee, Pa., who is majoring in political science; Mary Haggerty, a sophomore from Newfoundland, N.J., who is majoring in political science; and Leah Majdic, a junior from Mountaintop, Pa., who is majoring in political science. This year, 35 students were selected to attend from 19 colleges and universities across Pennsylvania. Kimberly S. Adams, Ph.D., an ESU associate professor of political science, recruited the students and served as a faculty liaison between ESU and the NEW Leadership Institute.

Participants toured the Capitol in Harrisburg and heard from successful women leaders about politics and public policy. Sessions included, “Why You Should Consider Running for Office,” “What is Your Leadership Style,” and “Making a Difference: Women in the General Assembly,” with Representatives Cherelle Parker, Becky Corbin and Pam DeLissio, who all served as panelists.

The ESU Department of Political Science, the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences helped fund the students’ participation.
