Three East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) students were selected to attend a program which seeks to help prepare and empower young women to be future leaders in the political process. The students attended the National Education for Women\u2019s (NEW) Leadership Pennsylvania\u2122 institute at the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa. The NEW program is a six-day, concentrated curriculum for female students attending colleges and universities throughout Pennsylvania. Participants learned about networking, the need for women\u2019s leadership in the political process and participated in skills-building workshops.<\/p>\n
The ESU three students chosen to attend were Linda St. Cyr, a junior from Blakeslee, Pa., who is majoring in political science; Mary Haggerty, a sophomore from Newfoundland, N.J., who is majoring in political science; and Leah Majdic, a junior from Mountaintop, Pa., who is majoring in political science. This year, 35 students were selected to attend from 19 colleges and universities across Pennsylvania. Kimberly S. Adams, Ph.D., an ESU associate professor of political science, recruited the students and served as a faculty liaison between ESU and the NEW Leadership Institute.<\/p>\n
Participants toured the Capitol in Harrisburg and heard from successful women leaders about politics and public policy. Sessions included, \u201cWhy You Should Consider Running for Office,\u201d \u201cWhat is Your Leadership Style,\u201d and \u201cMaking a Difference: Women in the General Assembly,\u201d with Representatives Cherelle Parker, Becky Corbin and Pam DeLissio, who all served as panelists.<\/p>\n
The ESU Department of Political Science, the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences helped fund the students\u2019 participation. In the last three years, ESU has had eight students accepted into the NEW Leadership Program. All three ESU students who applied this year were accepted.<\/p>\n
