Distinguished Professor – Dr. Mary Ann Matras

East Stroudsburg University bestows its highest faculty honor, the Distinguished Professor Award, upon Dr. Mary Ann Matras for her classroom teaching, her scholarship, and her exemplary service to the education programs at ESU.
Dr. Matras’ career at ESU began in 1988. She was appointed to the Mathematics Department to develop and strengthen curriculum for the teaching of mathematics at both the elementary and secondary educational levels. She has designed six courses specifically tailored to the needs of K – 12 mathematics educators. She has undertaken a careful restructuring of ESU’s B.S. in Mathematics-Secondary Education program to bring it in full compliance with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards. She co-directed the 2001 National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) review that restored ESU’s NCATE accreditation, as well as the 2006 NCATE visit that led to a reaffirmation of accreditation. She is co-director of the current NCATE continuing preparation group, which includes directing a software project for tracking students seeking certification. She has been a major contributor to the restructuring committee for ESU’s education programs to bring them in line with changes required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Dr. Matras has published more than thirty-five articles on mathematics education and related topics. She has presented more than fifty papers at regional and national conferences. She has served as an article and book reviewer for the journal Mathematics Teacher for over twenty years. She has served as President of the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics and as Chair of the Pennsylvania State Mathematics Coalition. She has been a member of the Executive Council of the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics since 1989.
Dr. Matras received her B.S. from the University of Illinois, her M.A. from Governors State University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. In 2004 she received the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Award for Distinguished Service.
